Unusual event today: perceptible earthquake in Varadero and Santa Marta
HAVANA, May 9 No consequences for people’s lives or reported economic losses, a perceptible earthquake in areas of Varadero and Santa MartaToday it became an unusual event for neighbors and workers, with due and cautious attention from the Civil Defense as established by the protocols.
It emerged this Wednesday that the network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service recorded a perceptible earthquake at 3:12 pm local time, located at the coordinates 23,170 degrees north latitude and 81,280 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 5.0 kilometers ( km) and with a magnitude of 2.8 according to the Richter scale, 3.0 km north of Santa Marta, in the Cárdenas municipality.
Lieutenant Colonel Williams González Hernández, head of the Civil Defense of the Matanzas Military Region, stated that workers and neighbors perceived the earthquake in the area of the Aguas Varadero company, the basic secondary school of Santa Marta, on 13th street of the Hicacos peninsula and other surrounding areas.
Everything happened without great alarm since the local population is prepared for any event of this type because it is in the area of possible telluric movements, said González Hernández.
It was a matter of seconds, I heard a roar and at the same time I thought I had gotten dizzy, I went out into the street and the neighbors were commenting on the moment, something unusual in the routine of the day, declared Melisand Mercier, a resident of Santa Marta.
The main authorities of the territory are informed by the Civil Defense Body of the Cárdenas Military Sector, as established by the protocols that ensure the safety of citizens.
