Pitcher Miguel Alfredo González dies in traffic accident in Havana

HAVANA, Nov. 26th Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez died Thursday in his native Cuba, the Phillies announced Friday.

He was released from the team Phillies in April of 2016 after spending the bulk of his career in the minor leagues. Gonzalez died in a motor vehicle accident in Havana, Cuba. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this hard time”.

He wound up signing with the Phillies on a three-year deal late during the 2013 season, a contract worth a total of $12 million with a vesting option for the 2014 season. Gonzalez experienced his most successful years pitching in his homeland – which included two World Cup appearances in 2009 and 2011 – but was suspended from the national team for his multiple failed attempts to defect.

Gonzalez only appeared in six games with Philadelphia due to arm trouble, allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings in 2014. According to his official age in major league baseball, Gonzalez turned 31 in September.

The 34-year-old passed away Thursday in a vehicle accident in his native Cuba, according to multiple reports.
