Tropical storm Philippe approaches Cuba

Tropical storm Philippe approaches CubaHAVANA, Oct. 28th  Tropical Storm Philippe has developed near Havana and it is expected to contribute heavy rain in western Cuba  this weekend .

Data from an Air Force Reserve Reconnaissance aircraft found that this system had formed into a tropical storm Saturday afternoon.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for the Cuban provinces of Isla de la Juventud, La Habana, Ciudad de la Habana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Villa Clara and for the northwestern Bahamas. Tropical storm conditions are expected within these areas within the next on Saturday.

The strongest winds are expected to remain to the east of its center, but a slight deviation in its track or an increase in the size of the wind field could bring tropical-storm force winds to the areas in the watch. Gusts above 40 mph are possible in stronger bands across southern Florida.

Conditions are conducive for additional development, and slow intensification is likely. Four to eight inches of rainfall is likely in western and central Cuba and the northern Bahamas, with isolated totals as high as 10 inches through Sunday.
