The UN donates almost 3 thousand mattresses to Cuba, after two months of the devastating tornado

HAVANA, March 15th  After two months of the passage of the tornado that devastated several municipalities of Havana, the United Nations (UN) made a donation of nearly three thousand mattresses for the victims.

According to official sources Soledad Bauza, deputy resident representative of the Development Program (UNDP), “in the next stages of the cooperation will arrive to the largest of the Antilles another three thousand mattresses, in addition to sheets, towels and ceilings for the repair of households”.

He also told the ACN that they are preparing some thousand 850 kitchen kits and that they are about to arrive “a thousand modules of tiles of 75 square meters, which will be installed by the government of the capital, which already has the structures to fix the ceilings “

“We continue to mobilize resources within the response of the United Nations system to the devastating tornado, which also includes the recycling of debris and support for mini-industries of construction materials,” the official said.

The island received about 2 thousand 125 personal mattresses and another 700 double, which will benefit 3 thousand 525 people.

A few weeks ago, the United Nations System (UNS) in Cuba confirmed that it will donate 14.3 million dollars for the recovery of Havana after the damage caused by the tornado on January 27.

According to the Plan of Action, the objective is “to respond to the urgent needs of 253,000 people affected by the tornado in the 14 popular councils that suffered the greatest impact”.

The EF4 tornado that passed through the Cuban capital left 7 people dead and more than 190 injured. According to the latest figures from the Council of Ministers, there are some 7336 damaged homes, and at the moment there are more than 9,900 people evacuated.
