HAVANA, April 29 An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale was reported this morning in Baracoa, Guantánamo, the seismological services of Europe and the United States reported.

The epicentre of the phenomenon was located about 40 kilometres southeast of Baracoa and at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The news was confirmed by the National Seismological Service of Cuba, although this centre registered the tremor with a magnitude of 4.8.

“At 6:22 am on Monday, April 29, 2020, the Cuban National Seismological Service Station Network registered an earthquake reported as perceptible, located at coordinates 20.12 degrees North Latitude and -74.11 degrees West Longitude, at a depth of 10 km.

It had a magnitude of 4.8 Richter, located 16 km south-southeast of Maisí in the province of Guantánamo ”, details a note released on social networks by the Baracoa Civil Defense Risk Center.

The information adds that perceptibility reports were received in all the municipalities of the province of Guantánamo and in Moa, province of Holguín.

So far, there is no record of material or human damage in any of those territories.

The tremor registered today in Baracoa qualifies as the perceptible earthquake No. 5 of the year 2020. The previous one, of magnitude 4, occurred on the afternoon of last Monday and was felt in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. It had its epicenter 31 kilometres southwest of the municipality of Niceto Pérez, in Guantánamo, about 20 kilometres deep.
