HAVANA, June 29 The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that regular direct flights to Cuba will resume as of July 1, reported today the spokesperson for the diplomatic entity, Maria Zajárova. The decision to resume regular direct flights with Cuba “will give new impetus” to bilateral ties, as well as help to restore the Russian tourist flow “to the hospitable and so familiar” for Russians “the island of freedom”, Zajárova commented. .
The diplomat also stressed that Russia is working “to expand international passenger air transport” despite the difficulties that arose as a result of sanctions imposed by Western countries.
Direct regular flights to Cuba will be operated by the Aeroflot subsidiary, the Russian airline Rossiya. According to Zajárova it is “important and joyful news” for those who like to travel and love that country.
Direct flights between the two nations have been suspended since March 2022 as a result of the sanctions imposed on Moscow after the start of its special operation in Ukraine, which were also accompanied by the cancellation of flights. In this context, trips to Havana require connections to other cities, such as Istanbul (Turkey).
At the end of last year, after long negotiations, the situation began to change when a major tour operator announced the resumption of flights between the two countries, connecting first with the resorts of Varadero and Cayo Coco.
