Magnitude 4.7 earthquake in the morning west of Cuba

HAVANA, 29 June (AFP) An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 hit the western part of Cuba on Tuesday, June 29 in the morning, causing concern among residents and the evacuation of some buildings, authorities said.

“A few minutes ago there was a noticeable earthquake in western Cuba (…), people in high buildings came down for protection. Keep calm, ”Cuban Civil Defense wrote on its Twitter account. The shock was felt in several areas of Havana.
The American Institute of Geophysics (USGS) estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 4.7, locating the epicentre 10 kilometres deep near Candelaria, in the province of Pinar del Rio, 70 kilometers west of La Havana.
Cuba’s National Center for Seismological Investigations (Cenais) calculated a magnitude of 5.1, adding that “this is the 4th perceptible earthquake of 2021” on the island.
The last major earthquake recorded in this region occurred in January 2020: with a magnitude of 7.7, it shook the Caribbean between Cuba and Jamaica, but no damage had been reported, despite reported evacuations from La Havana in Miami.
