Germany-Cuba Scientific Symposium opens in Havana

HAVANA Mar 7th The First Symposium of the Max Planck Society of Germany and Cuba, Frontiers of Science, will contribute to promoting reciprocal scientific knowledge, said Aurora Fernández González, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, at the opening of the meeting on Wednesday.

The inaugural ceremony took place in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana (UH), where the Cuban official said that the event will also allow collaborative actions in areas of common interest, through research projects and doctoral and postdoctoral training.

Scientists from both countries subsequently began their sessions at the Tryp Habana Libre hotel, under the sponsorship of the Max Planck Society, a network of research institutes that honors the memory of the German physicist and mathematician considered the founder of quantum theory and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.

The Faculty of Physics of the UH plays the role of coordinator of the meeting, which includes presentations and exchanges on biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of physics, according to the program.

In addition, it will deal with the prevention and fight against infectious diseases: synthetic vaccines with carbohydrates and synthesis of continuous flow of affordable medicines against malaria, and nanotransporters for the selective delivery of medicines.

Other topics of great interest include the causality of chronic bacterial infections in human cancer, modelling the metabolism of mammalian continuous cultures, as well as in situ structural biology: the promise and challenges of breeding.

The Max Planck Society has 16 Nobel Prizes won by its scientists since 1948 and is generally remembered as the leading basic science research organization in Germany. (ACN)
