Former Minister Rodrigo Malmierca is the new Cuban ambassador to Canada

Exministro Rodrigo Malmierca es el nuevo embajador de Cuba en Canadá

HAVANA, Febr 16. From the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment to the Ambassador of Cuba in Canada. This is the position that Rodrigo Malmierca will occupy after his replacement last year as head of the sector, where Ricardo Cabrisas was appointed as the new minister.

Malmierca, in this sense, will replace Héctor Igarza in the northern nation, who will be “transferred from the mission”, according to the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cuba.

In fact, in number 12 of 2024, there are nearly 30 agreements approved in the Cuban Parliament and Council of State where Malmierca is designated as a diplomatic representative in Canada.

The former minister has been ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in New York. He was also ambassador to Belgium, the European Union and Luxembourg between 2002 and 2005. The year before, between 1992 and 1997, he was a counselor of Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Cuban Embassy in Brazil.

The idea of this movement will be to strengthen Cuba’s commercial position with an important source of tourists like Canada.

It was between 2018 and 2021, when the current vice minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, held this same position, and several independent media commented on the luxurious life she led in the northern nation, living in a residence located in Acacia Avenue in Rockcliffe, a municipal district located on the eastern edge of the city of Ottawa, Ontario.

This house, in the Tudor Revival style, dates back to the 1940s, has two floors and seven rooms with leaded stained glass windows, a property that the Cuban government purchased in 1970 from a local judge for the use of its ambassador.
