Dominican Republic will become the new supplier of eggs and chicken meat to Cuba

HAVANA, May 10  Amid widespread food shortages, Cuba is looking for more allies to import some basic products such as eggs and chicken. This time, after signing several trade agreements, the Dominican Republic will become a supplier of these and other processed poultry foods.

On the Cuban side, there has been a deep interest in imports from that other island. This has been confirmed by Dominican media such as Diario Libre, after three poultry companies were authorized to legally sell chickens, eggs and processed poultry products, such as mincemeat. and livers.

In this sense, the Dominican Poultry Association (ADA) reported that the certification process began after the rapprochement between both countries when in September 2023, one of the Dominican companies exported eggs to Cuba due to the closure of the border with Haiti.

Miguel Lajara, a member of the ADA, spoke of how these exports can be covered without affecting local demand and consumption. In fact, the Dominican Republic has been exporting products of this type to Barbados for some time.

He added: “We can add all export segments to Dominican poultry farming to achieve growing potential.”

Cuba currently faces great limitations in national production, so it applies this alternative and tries to alleviate the food crisis.
