Cuban title in Underwater Photography World Cup

HAVANA, Oct. 15th. CUBA won one of the prizes in dispute at the XIX World Underwater Photography Championship and V World Underwater Video Championship in Varadero 2023.Fabián Álvarez and Yaroyg Oñoz won the title in a fight with competitors from 19 other nations, Luis López Bermúdez, Inder methodologist and one of the organizers of the event, confirmed to JIT from the headquarters.

Álvarez from Camagüey was the author of the winning snapshots. He had the logistical support of Oñoz, with whom he creates ideas and projects before doing the dives, so each photo is the result of teamwork.

The Cuban team also took fourth place in the creative category, seventh in macro with Julio Ruiz Rodríguez and tenth in photos, López said.

The Meliá Internacional Hotel in Varadero hosted the awards, in which Italy won three titles in the documentary video, creative photography, and wide angle model category categories.

Turkey and Spain achieved two titles respectively and Portugal one through Nuno Goncalves and Ana Gómez in the fish category.

The Spaniards Jorge Candan and María del Pilar Barrios won two gold medals and several of their photos were among the first in the different award-winning modalities. Chile won a bronze medal in the theme category.

Representatives from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Slovenia, Germany, Chile, Brazil, Japan, Denmark, Netherlands, Turkey and Cuba participated, under the auspices of the World Confederation of Underwater Photography, the Ministry of Tourism and Inder, among others.
