HAVANA, Feb. 1st Cuba has recorded more than 1,000 new coronavirus infections within one day for the first time since the start of the pandemic, according to the health ministry on Sunday.
Health authorities said 1,012 new cases were registered within 24 hours on the Caribbean island, which has so far come through the pandemic relatively unscathed. In total, about 26,000 confirmed cases and 214 deaths related to Covid-19 have been recorded so far.
To prevent further infection, Havana at the weekend ordered airlines to scale down the number of flights to the United States, Mexico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Colombia.
Foreigners entering the country will be quarantined in designated hotels and subjected to two coronavirus tests within five days. Cubans arriving back will be isolated at quarantine stations.
