Cuba and Russia agree on comprehensive railway development project

HAVANA, Dec 13  Cuba and Russia agreed on the implementation of the comprehensive project for the supply of locomotives,

modernization of workshops and the continuity of the supply of Russian technique and equipment, the official media published today.

During the 12th Session of the Working Group for Collaboration in the Field of Transport of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission, which met virtually, the implementation of the project by the Sinara-Machines Transport Group, specialized in the construction of locomotives, diesel engines and railroad construction machinery, and their maintenance, was highlighted.

Cuba is represented by the Union of Cuban Railways and its Tradex importer, according to a report of Granma newspaper.

The director of International Relations of the Transportation Ministry, Ivette Caballero, specified that in the meeting Cuba proposed the creation of international economic associations for the transportation of goods and passengers by rail, to and from the Special Mariel Development Zone.

It was also agreed that the island should carry out a feasibility study on the prioritized projects for the development of the ports, while the certification of the Russian institutions that take part in the repair of parts and aggregates of aircrafts operated by Cubana de Aviacion will be examined.

The meeting was chaired by Naima Alfonso, Cuban Deputy Minister of Transport, and Dimitri Zvierev, Secretary of State and Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.

Both nations are currently promoting a constant updating of bilateral economic ties in areas such as energy, metallurgy, automotive, railway and aviation, as well as agriculture and the biopharmaceutical industry, among many other sectors.
