Vehículos clásicos competirán en un rally de regularidad en La Habana

HAVANA, Oct 28 (RHC) Sixty antique cars and 10 motorcycles will  participate on Sunday, November 4, the XIV Rally of Regularity, Castrol Cup, in greeting to the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, the 120th of the arrival of the first car to the Isla and the 15 of the club “A lo cubano”.

The event, organized by the “A lo cubano” club, unique to old cars on the island, will be about 50 km long and will start at 9.30 a.m. on November 4 from the Tropicana Park to culminate around two hours later. the Central Park Hotel, adjacent to the park of the same name.

The organizers gave a press conference on Friday for details of the recreational competition, which is expected to be started by the French ambassador to Cuba, Mr. Jean-Marie Bruno.

Alberto Gutiérrez, president of “A lo cubano”, warned that among the requirements that must meet the cars to compete in the rally are an “adequate body and image” and recognized the efforts of their owners to maintain them.

“After 58 years without receiving spare parts, we continue with these cars thanks to the ingenuity and sacrifice of all,” Gutierrez said and said that among the classic cars confirmed for the rally include some of the brands Chevrolet, Ford, Cadillac and Austin.

Although the tour will cover six of the 15 municipalities of the Cuban capital – Marianao, Playa, Plaza de la Revolución, Cerro, Centro Habana and Habana Vieja – the trip will be kept secret until two minutes before the start.

It will not be a speed competition, the traffic laws on the island will be respected and three cars and a motorcycle will be awarded, said David González, designer of the rally.

The possible presence of the French ambassador to Cuba is due to the fact that the first car that arrived on the island (1898) was of French origin, from the Le Parisene brand.

That is why the organizers called for the race to a French car of the oldest still rolling in Cuba, a Citroen of 1938, which will participate as a guest and will be the first to leave with the number 00.

“A lo cubano” is the only club of old cars that still remains on the island and traditionally organizes these types of events, which mix culture and sport.

For this occasion, the performance of the rock group Los Kent and Cuban television will be organized as a participation contest.

Gutiérrez said that next year they plan to make a Guinness record, which would consist of a rally with the most cars that arrived in the country before 1960 and that are still running.
