HAVANA, may 29th (AP) Flooding has damaged an oil refinery in central Cuba and caused crude oil to spill into Cienfuegos Bay as the remnants of Alberto continue to drench the island in heavy rain.
State-owned TV showed authorities using barriers Tuesday to try to contain the spill from the Cienfuegos refinery about 150 miles southeast of Havana.
The amount of crude that leaked was unknown but government media said 12,000 cubic meters of contaminated wastewater have leaked since Monday.
Heavy rain from the outer bands of the storm system is falling over much of Cuba. Authorities say about 20,000 people had been evacuated, mostly in provinces of Villa Clara and Cienfuegos. No deaths have been reported but the storm has damaged homes and bridges and halted traffic on the main east-west highway in several places.
