HAVANA, Oct. 16 With an important participation of Ibero-American golfers, the 16th Golf Tournament “Day of Hispanidad”, a sporting event organized every year by the Spanish Embassy in Cuba, was concluded on Sunday, October 15 in Varadero.
In the presence of His Excellency Juan Jose Buitrago, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Spain in Cuba, who officially closed this edition of the prestigious tournament and launched the call for the XVII edition in 2018, the first three places were rewarded in two categories of gentlemen and one of ladies.
In the first men’s category, the winner was Spanish Pedro Garrido with a net accumulated of 136, escorted in the podium by Daniel Priedrahita of Colombia and the Cuban Jesus Rueda, occupants of the second and third positions respectively. The second men’s category was dominated by Cuban golfer Javier Casas with 167 points, followed by Aviecer López (191 points) and Esteban Fistonich (192).
For its part, the female category, with only five participants, had a single protagonist from start to finish: Cuban Annia Blanco, winner with accumulated final of 157 points, and winner in addition to the award for the longest drive. Annia, who managed to make a hole-in-one on the first day of competition, was seconded by FrancineWalkey, while third place was occupied by Esther Stutz.
The closing ceremony was also the setting for the delivery of precious gifts, several of them sent by the legendary Spanish golfer Jose Maria Olazabal, consisting of a book of his autographed authorship, several golf balls, also autographed, as well as a game of golf clubs with their additions.
Another special moment came from the Spanish airline AirEuropa, one of the sponsors of the event with the Excelencias Group, and that, as each year, it raffled between the participants two plane tickets for a round trip Madrid-Havana- Madrid or Havana-Madrid-Havana. The delivery of the raffled tickets was made by Mr. Raúl Álvarez Guerra, AirEuropa’s manager in Cuba.
The Varadero Golf Club was once again a luxury venue for an event that is becoming more and more prestigious and that year after year attending international golf figures. “I call you to attend the XVII edition of the Golf Tournament” Hispanidad Day “next year, and here I will be again, but this time as a player,” said the Spanish ambassador to Cuba, Juan José Buitrago, in his words of closing of the tournament.
